Commissioner of the King visits Aviko Rixona

On Monday, July 8, Emile Roemer, the Commissioner of the King of Limburg, also known as the 'governor', along with Deputy Marc Caldenberg, portfolio holder for Energy and Climate, visited the headquarters of Aviko Rixona in Oostrum, The Netherlands. The visit focused on collaboration in the transition to more sustainable production and regional practices.

Aviko produces fries in Lomm, and its subsidiary Aviko Rixona makes dried potato products in Oostrum. The potato processing requires significant amounts of natural gas. Nevertheless, Aviko and Aviko Rixona are committed to large-scale sustainability efforts throughout the entire production chain, from farmer to table, over the coming decades.

Boost

Maikel van Bakel, General Director of Aviko Rixona, said, "Together with Mr. Roemer and Mr. Caldenberg, we aim to explore how the province and our two Limburg-based Aviko companies can collaborate to accelerate this process. This will give a boost to both our production processes and the region.”

Roadmap

Aviko Rixona is making significant strides towards energy-neutral production. While the company initially aimed to halve its CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2018 levels, it now expects to achieve a 65% reduction by 2028. Van Bakel stated, "We have developed a roadmap with various initiatives and investments to reach this goal.” Between 2019 and 2023, Aviko Rixona expanded its Oostrum factory. "We used this investment to double our production capacity while simultaneously making our processes more efficient and sustainable.”

Innovative technologies and methods

Many other projects are planned to further enhance the sustainability of Aviko and Aviko Rixona’s production chain in the coming years. Van Bakel explained, “By working with the province, we can develop innovative technologies and methods for sustainable production. Additionally, we contribute to reducing CO2 emissions and using natural resources more efficiently. We are looking into how we can concretely realize these goals in collaboration with the province.”
